Mitrabha Guha clear first at O2C Doeberl Cup 2026 Premier and Blitz
GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win O2C Doeberl Cup 2026 Premier. FM Alexis Vargas Arteaga (COL) scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. GM Cristhian Camilo Rios (COL), IM David Cannon (AUS) and FM Albert Winkelman (AUS) scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed third to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was AU$ 26140. The top three prizes were $5000 + Chessnut Pro, $3000 and $1500 along with a trophy each.
Mitrabha wins both Premier and Blitz for the second consecutive year
GM Mitrabha Guha had a fantastic tour down under last year. He had won two events in each of the three tournaments – Melbourne Open, O2C Doeberl Cup and Sydney Open 2025, he played. This time also he did the same, starting with O2C Doeberl Cup.
GM Mitrabha Guha and FM Alexis Vargas Arteaga (COL) were the coleaders 6.5/8 each, heading into the final round. Mitrabha had already defeated Alexis in the third round. He finished off the event with a win over GM Jacek Stopa (POL) to become a clear champion. Alexis drew against FM Albert Winkelman (AUS) to finish second. GM Cristhian Camilo Rios (COL) won his final game against IM Ikeda Junta (AUS) to claim third place. Mitrabha and IM David Cameron (AUS) have won the fighting fund worth AU $1000. Mitrabha – Jacek, Round 9
Position after 24.Nxf4!
GM Mitrabha Guha (2505) made a very well-timed trade of his knight for three pawns 24.Nxf4! It was necessary, otherwise Black’s kingside attack would have been overwhelming. 24…exf4 25.Qxf4 Qf7 26.Qxd6 Re8 27.Bd4 and what followed was a masterclass by Mitrabha on how to utilize his four pawns masterfully which overpowered his opponent GM Jacek Stopa’s (POL, 2342) pieces. This win made Mitrabha a clear champion of the tournament for the second consecutive year with the exact same score 7.5/9.

Blitz
Mitrabha won the Blitz Open scoring sole 8/9. FM Soo Kai Jie (AUS) and IM David Cannon (AUS) scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes were AU $500, $250 and $150 each.

A total of 60 players including six GMs, six IMs, a WGM and a WIM took part from eleven countries across the world. The five-day nine-round Rating Premier tournament was organized by IA Shaun Press in Canberra, Australia from 2nd to 6th April 2026. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.

The one-day nine-round Blitz Rating Open tournament was organized by IA Shaun Press in Canberra, Australia from 2nd to 6th April 2026.
