Mayank Chakraborty convincingly clinches Gold at Asian Junior Open 2026, Daksh Goyal Bronze
GM Mayank Chakraborty scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to clinch Gold at Asian Junior Open 2026. IM Artem Pingin secured Silver 7/9, Daksh Goyal Bronze 6.5/9.
Mayank’s sixth triumph of the year, Daksh scores an IM-norm
The top seed of the event, GM Mayank Chakraborty was the sole leader 7/8, heading into the last round. Second seeded, IM Artem Pingin was the sole pursuer at 6.5/8. Artem drew against Mayank, the former finished second and the latter – champion. FM Amanmuhammet Hommadov (TKM) lost to Daksh Goyal who claimed third place. Daksh edged past six other players on tie-breaks to claim Bronze and also scored an IM-norm for making a podium finish.
For the second consecutive year, an Indian won Asian Junior Open. Last year, Sourath Biswas won the same and became an IM.

Daksh Goyal (2065) made the mistake of playing 18.Be5? His opponent, GM Mayank Chakraborty (2500) had no trouble seizing the advantage 18…a6 19.Nc3 Nd7 20.Bc7 Rdc8 21.Ba5 Ba3 22.Rd4 Rc5 23.Rad1 Nf6 24.Bb4 Bxb4 25.Rxb4 Bc6 and Black went on to win the game. This crucial win allowed Mayank to maintain his sole lead, heading into the last round.

A total of 85 players including a GM and four IMs took part from nine countries across Asia. The seven-day nine-round Rating Open tournament was organized by Maharashtra Chess Association at ITC Maratha in Mumbai, Maharashtra from 19th and 25th August 2026. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
