Soumma Chakraborty superb at 3rd West Bengal State Amateur Championship 2026

Soumma Chakraborty scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win 3rd West Bengal State Amateur (Below 2300) Chess Championship 2026. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. 12-year-old Ankit Das scored sole 7/8 to secure second place. Priyanshu Das, Laltu Chatterjee, Avighna Das and Ritwick Pal scored 6.5/8. They were placed third to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹150000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. This is Soumma’s first State tournament triumph of his career.

Soumma’s first State title

Soumma Chakraborty was the sole leader 6.5/7, heading into the last round. Half a dozen players – Priyanshu Das, Ankit Das, Aharsi Ghosh, Rachishnu Datta, Rwitik Chakraborty and Ritwick Pal were trailing by a half point at 6/7 each. Soumma defeated Aharsi to become the clear champion. Ankit won againt Rwitik to finish second. Ritwick drew against Priyanshu and the latter claimed third place.

A total of 334 players took part from various districts across West Bengal. The four-day eight-round Rating tournament was organized by Hooghly District Chess Association at Rishra Sewak Sangh in Hooghly, West Bengal from 29th January to 1st February 2026. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
