31st TePe Sigeman & Co. 2026 R4: Jorden van Foreest vandalises Magnus Carlsen

Jorden van Foreest (NED) scored his first win of the event against Magnus Carlsen (NOR) in Round 4 of 31st TePe Sigeman & Co. 2026. This is Carlsen’s first loss in a Classical rated game in nearly a year since he suffered defeat against the World Champion, D Gukesh at Norway Chess 2025.

Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus gains sole lead

Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus is the sole leader 3/4. He is closely followed by Jorden van Foreest, Arjun Erigaisi and Nodirbek Abdusattorov at 2.5/4 each. Magnus Carlsen and Andy Woodward are at 2/4 each. Nils Grandelius is having a tough tournament as he suffered his fourth consecutive loss.

Jorden – Carlsen: 1-0

Jorden van Foreest (NED, 2735) and Magnus Carlsen (NOR, 2840) have played six Classical rated games against each other, five of them were in Tata Steel and the remaining one at a European Club Cup. Carlsen won two of them and the remaining four ended in draws. Jorden has worked with Carlsen in his team for World Championship matches. So obviously, Jorden knows the World no.1, a lot more than one can fathom. The strong Dutch player decided to trade queens as early as the ninth move in Sicilian Najdorf.

20…Ndf6? allowed 21.Nc6! forcing Black to either lose a pawn or give up an exchange. 21…Rxc6 22.Rb8+ Ke7 22.Rxh8 Rxc4 so Black got a pawn for the lost exchange as a compensation.

It is clear that Carlsen is not at his best. Otherwise, him not being able to salvage a half point from the above position is a clear sign that he might not be at his usual self anymore.

90 minutes for 40 moves and then 30 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from the first move (Malmö rules – no draws before move 40).
