Indrajeet Mahindrakar wins Bihar Rating Open 2026
Indrajeet Mahindrakar, GM Petr Kiriakov and Prithvi Sharma scored 8/9 each at Bihar Rating Open 2026. Indrajeet won the tournament on tie-breaks. Kiriakov and Prithvi were placed second and third respectively. The total prize fund was ₹1000000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹60000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each.
Indrajeet’s first tournament triumph of the year
GM Petr Kiriakov was the sole leader 7.5/8, heading into the final round. Five players – Indrajeet Mahindrakar, Parambrata Sarkar, Sundram Kumar, FM Rupesh Jaiswal (NEP) and Prithvi Sharma were trailing by a half point at 7/8 each. Parambrata lost to Indrajeet and the latter became the champion. Sundram drew against the top seed, Kiriakov who finished second. Rupesh suffered defeat against Prithvi who claimed third place.

Position after 32.Ng2?
In an already difficult position, Parambrata Sarkar (2011) made an incorrect retreat 32.Ng2? His opponent, Indrajeet Mahindrakar (2117) who was in a virtual must-win situation to become the champion of the tournament, found the correct continuation 32…Bg5 33.Bg1 Rxf1 34.Rxf1 Rf8 35.Rxf8 Qxf8 36.h4 Bc1 37.bxc5 Qf3 38.c6 Qh3+ 39.Bh2 Nf3 40.e5+ Kh8 41.Ne3 Bd2 42.Qxd2 Nbxd2 and it’s over as checkmate is inevitable.

A total of 613 players including a GM and IM took part from various parts of the country, five from Nepal and one from Zimbabwe. The five-day nine-round Rating Open tournament was organized by All Bihar Chess Association at Patliputra Sports Complex Indoor Stadium in Patna, Bihar from 25th to 29th March 2026. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
