IM Kushagra Mohan scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 20th Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Rating Open at LBHM Chess Festival 2026.

Kushagra’s third overall, second rating tournament triumph of the year

IM Kushagra Mohan was the sole leader 7.5/8, going into the last round. FM Viresh Sharnarthi, GM Mayank Chakraborty, CM Shlok Sharnarthi, IM Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh and Ajjesh J R were trailing by a half point at 7/8 each. Nubairshah drew against Kushagra and the latter became the champion. Shlok lost to his younger brother Viresh who finished second. Mayank suffered defeat against Ajjesh who claimed third place.

Kushagra also won the 21st Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Rapid Rating Open, a day after wininng this event. That will be mentioned in detail in a separate report.

The total prize fund of the festival was ₹3222111, ₹1414101 for the Classical Open. The top three prizes were ₹111000, ₹101101 and ₹51000 along with a trophy and medal each.

A total of 458 players including two GMs and three IMs took part from various parts of the country, two from Sri Lanka and three from the USA. The five-day nine-round Rating Open tournament was organized by Nagnath Halkude at Dhruv Global School in Pune, Maharashtra from 18th to 22nd May 2026. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
