Abhijay Barua dominates 2nd Caravel Cup Roma B 2026, Avyaay Shroff third
Abhijay Barua scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 2nd Caravel Cup Roma B (1500-1900) Rating 2026.
Abhijay’s first victory in Italy, Velavaa Ragavesh third in Open A
12-year-old Abhijay Barua was the sole leader 7/8, heading into the final round of Open B. Arnur Nurakhmetov (KAZ) was the only pursuer at 6/8. Edoardo Lustro (ITA) lost to Abhijay and the latter became a clear champion. Vincenzo Iatrino (ITA) drew against Arnur and the latter finished second. 11-year-old Avyaay Shroff defeated Vito Fasanella (ITA) to finish third scoring 6.5/9.
This is Abhijay’s first tournament triumph of his career. Abhijay went on to win another tournament in Italy immediately after this. It will be mentioned in detail in a separate report. What a way to win his career’s first two tournament triumphs.
GM Aleksandr Volodin (EST) won Open A scoring a perfect 9/9. He finished a massive 3.5 points ahead of the rest. Five players scored 5.5/9 each. Out of them, Emanuele Pacilli (ITA) and CM Velavaa Ragavesh were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks.
The total prize fund was €4700, €2900 in Open A, €1450 in Open B and €350 in Open C . The top three prizes in Open A (≥1850) were €1000, €800 and €650 each. The top three prizes in Open B (1500-1900) were €500, €400 and €300 each.

Abhijay Barua scored an unbeaten 8/9, finished 1.5 points ahead of the field and gained 207.6 Elo rating points

A total of 20 players including a GM and an IM took part from four countries across the world in the Open A (≥1850) category. The six-day nine-round Rating tournament was organized by Luca Barbieri and Matteo Sampieriat Caravel Hotel in Roma, Italy from 13th to 18th June 2026. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.

A total of 21 players took part from six countries across the world in the Open B (1500-1900) category. The six-day nine-round Rating tournament was organized by Luca Barbieri and Matteo Sampieriat Caravel Hotel in Roma, Italy from 13th to 18th June 2026. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
