Vivaan Vishal Shah clinches Gold, Akshay Borgaonkar Silver and Apoorv Kamble Bronze at Asian Junior Rapid Open 2026
FM Vivaan Vishal Shah and IM Akshay Borgaonkar scored 6/7 each at Asian Junior Rapid Open 2026. Vivaan won Gold, Akshay Silver according to tie-breaks. IM Apoorv Kamble won Playoff to claim Bronze.
Vivaan’s biggest triumph of his career
IM Apoorv Kamble was the sole leader 5.5/6, heading into the final round. FM Vivaan Vishal Shah defeated Apoorv to clinch Gold. IM Akshay Borgaonkar won against GM Mayank Chakraborty to win Silver. Since Apoorv and FM Imangali Akhilbay (KAZ) had all three tie-break scores same, they had to play Playoff Blitz games to determine the Bronze medal winner. Apoorv won the first game and drew the second to secure Bronze. This is Vivaan’s first rating tournament triumph of the year.

A total of 79 players including a GM and five IMs took part from eight countries across Asia. The two-day seven-round Rapid Rating Open tournament was organized by Maharashtra Chess Association at ITC Maratha in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 17th and 18th August 2026. The time control of the tournament was 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment.
