Garv Rai dominates 1st Uttarakhand Rapid Rating Open 2026

Garv Rai scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st Uttarakhand Rapid Rating Open 2026. He finished a full point ahead of the rest. Shreyansh Sahu, IM Akshat Khamparia, Kishan Kumar and CM Nimay Agrawal scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second to fifth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹31000, ₹21000 and ₹11000 along with a trophy each.

Garv clinches the first tournament he plays in 2026

Third seed of the tournament, Garv Rai made a perfect start by winning eight games in-a-row. He had a full point lead heading into the final round. Shreyansh Sahu, IM Akshat Khamparia and CM Nimay Agrawal were trailing at 7/8 each. A draw in Round 9 was enough for Garv to become the champion. That’s exactly what he did against Shreyansh to finish first, Shreyansh, the teenager from Uttarakhand claimed second place. Akshat drew against Nimay to be placed third.

A total of 249 players including an IM took part from all over the country and four from Nepal. The two-day nine-round Rapid Rating Open tournament was organized by Dev Bhoomi Chess Association at Bhartiyam International School in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand on 10th and 11th January 2026. The time control of the tournament was 25 minutes + 10 seconds increment.
