Vladislav Nevednichy clear first at 5th Mikis Theodorakis International 2026, Harikrishnan A Ra second
GM Vladislav Nevednichy (ROU) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 5th Mikis Theodorakis International Tournament Group A (>1750) 2026. GM Harikrishnan A Ra scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. GM Kristian Stuvik Holm (NOR), GM Momchil Nikolov (BUL) and GM Vladimir Hamitevici (MDA) scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed third to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was €4100. The top three prizes were €1000, €600 and €400 along with a trophy each.

The tournament witnessed the total participation of 138 players – 53 in Group A (>1750). 67 in Group B (<1800) and 18 in Group C.

Mikis Theodorakis
Mikis Theodorakis (1925-2021) was one of the most important Greek composers and an emblematic personality of the world music and cultural scene. He became internationally known with his work “Zorbas”, whose music was identified with Greece and loved all over the world. His compositions, which include symphonic works, operas, and songs of poetry set to music, touch on universal themes of freedom and justice.
Theodorakis’ music was closely associated with the resistance against the dictatorship in Greece, while his political work made him a symbol of struggle and freedom internationally. He has collaborated with world-renowned artists and his music has been performed in leading concert halls and festivals. His multidimensional contribution to art and his political activity made him a deeply influential figure both in Greece and internationally.

A total of 53 players including five GMs and an IM took part from twelve countries across the world. The seven-day nine-round Rating tournament was organized by Chania Chess Academy, A.P.O. “MIKIS THEODORAKIS” at Center for Mediterranean Architecture – The Great Arsenal in Chania, Greece from 3rd to 9th April 2026. The time control of the tournament was 40 moves in 90 minutes + 15 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
