IM Muthaiah Al scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win Lyon Henri Rinck International Open 2026. Nine players scored 7/9 each. Out of them, IM Emile Bassini (FRA) and GM Christian Bauer (FRA) secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. IM Sanket Chakravarty is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 7/9 to be placed sixth. The total prize fund was €4000. The top three prizes were €1000, €750 and €500 along with a trophy each.

Muthaiah’s first tournament triumph of the year

IM Muthaiah Al was the sole leader 7/8, heading into the last round. Five players – GM Christian Bauer (FRA), IM Emile Bassini (FRA), IM Tom Decuigniere (FRA), Alexander Pak (FRA) and IM Sanket Chakravarty were trailing by a half point at 6.5/8 each. Muthaiah drew against Alexander to become a clear champion. Tom shared the point against Emile and the latter secured second place. Bauer split the point with Sanket and the former finished third.

A total of 172 players including a GM and four IMs took part from 13 countries across the world. The five-day nine-round Rating Open tournament was organized by Le Lyon Olympique Echecs and ECAM Lasalle at ECAM Lasalle in Lyon, France from 11th to 15th April 2026. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
