Karthik Venkataraman clear first at 4th Annual Independence Day Open 2026
GM Karthik Venkataraman scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 4th Annual Independence Day Open 2026.
Karthik’s first rating tournament triumph of the year
The two-time National champion, GM Karthik Venkataraman had a relatively rough first half in 2026. However, he started the second half of the year with a bang. Karthik defeated Zhihan Xu (CAN) in the final round to become a clear champion. GM Jianchou Zhou (USA) and IM Anish Vivekananthan (USA) scored 7/9 each to share second place.
The total prize fund was US$ 10700, $5800 in Premier (>2000). The top three prizes were $2400, $1200 and $600 each.

Zhihan Xu blundered in a complex position 36…Qxc6?? GM Karthik Venktaraman (2566) seized his opportunity 37.Nxd4+- Qc5 38.Qxe6+ Kd8 39.Kh2 Qxd4 40.Rxa6 and it’s over. Black has to give up a lot of material to prevent the checkmate threat.

A total of 27 players took part from various parts of USA, Canada, India and Israel. The five-day nine-round Premier (>2000) Rating tournament was organized by Atlantic Chess Association at Washington Dulles Airport Marriott in Dulles, Virginia, USA from 5th to 9th July 2026. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
